Explosion at Nuclear Plant – after Japan’s 8.9 Quake

Similar to yesterday’s bad news, I awoke to learn of an explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan–a result of the 8.9 earthquake and ensuing tsunami. I’ve watched/read/heard a variety of reports one saying that the exterior part of the reactor deteriorated into an explosion. This cannot be good news for the interior, more fragile and dangerous section. I’ve also read about multiple point failure structures in these reactors, let’s hope there are more structures in place as a protective zone. However, the reports are not consistent. There are dire reports and then others that are more optimistic. Whatever the trend, I hope the outcome is on the more positive side. The last thing the Japanese need right now is a nuclear meltdown.
Interestingly, from the Twitter feeds, it appears that the Japanese government is a bit behind on this. But, who can blame them. They no doubt have family, friends, and colleagues who have been negatively affected by this disaster. This is a huge crisis in a country that is the most equipped for such a dramatic scenario. I’d hate to think of the outcome if this happened in a less prepared country.
Please God, be with the engineers who are trying to figure out this mess. And, be with the residents affected by this horrible situation.
