Explosion at Nuclear Plant – after Japan’s 8.9 Quake

Before & After Picture of Nuclear Reactor Explosion - Japan (Mar 2011)

This picture was posted by Jadath at: http://twitpic.com/48pqvs. I found this photo compelling, if only it were telling. If only.

Similar to yesterday’s bad news, I awoke to learn of an explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan–a result of the 8.9 earthquake and ensuing tsunami. I’ve watched/read/heard a variety of reports one saying that the exterior part of the reactor deteriorated into an explosion. This cannot be good news for the interior, more fragile and dangerous section. I’ve also read about multiple point failure structures in these reactors, let’s hope there are more structures in place as a protective zone. However, the reports are not consistent. There are dire reports and then others that are more optimistic. Whatever the trend, I hope the outcome is on the more positive side. The last thing the Japanese need right now is a nuclear meltdown.

Interestingly, from the Twitter feeds, it appears that the Japanese government is a bit behind on this. But, who can blame them. They no doubt have family, friends, and colleagues who have been negatively affected by this disaster. This is a huge crisis in a country that is the most equipped for such a dramatic scenario. I’d hate to think of the outcome if this happened in a less prepared country.

Please God, be with the engineers who are trying to figure out this mess. And, be with the residents affected by this horrible situation.

Picture of Crack in Earth – Japan’s 8.9 Earthquake

A crack left in earth after Japan's 8.9 Earthquake

Interesting picture of a crack in the earth due to Japan’s 8.9 earthquake on 11 March 2011. Picture posted by mitsu_1024 at: http://twitpic.com/48dazv.

I’m sure there will be many more devastating pix like this. I can’t imagine being on Japanese soil at the time the earthquake-tsunami hit. I can’t believe the pix of cars, trucks, boats, and buildings floating around like toys in dirty tub water. I’m still trying to grasp the reality like those who tried to grasp onto something for stability in the midst of the upheaval. Unsettling times…for sure.

What’s with the whirlpool off the coast of Japan? That’s totally freaky. I wonder what’s going on below to cause this reaction. I don’t remember seeing live footage or pix of that after the Tsunami in 2004.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese as we watch, helpless. I only wish that thoughts could rescue people.

The Stretches That Worked for Me

Tags :

Back in 2009, I was having horrible hip and sciatica pain. I went to an orthopedic surgeon, a sports medicine doc who was an athlete himself, I even talked to my endocrinologist about osteoporosis (had a Thyroidectomy back in 2003), and went to an osteopath. Had the osteopath maintained an office in MD, I would have stuck with him, but he was 500 miles away. I was given several diagnoses like bursitis and piriformis syndrome. But, there were no strong solutions. Just take Ibuprofin and rest. Great, so in order not to have pain, I screw up my liver. No thank you.

So, I googled like a mad woman in search of a cure for my aches and pains. During one of those google grabs, I found this simple video by a guy in his hotel room doing an equally simple stretch for Piriformis Syndrome. I tried it, and guess what … INSTANT RELIEF! Woo-hoo!! I no longer felt like I was 45 going on 90. I seriously thought I might be looking into a hip replacement. I felt old and feeble before my time. But, not any more.

Thankfully, I found this video. For a while I did the stretches every day. They really helped me and became part of my routine. Then, once I was over the worst of it, I slacked off. However, now whenever I tighten up after a run or as a result of doing legs at the gym, I do these handy little exercises for immediate relief. A BIG THANKS to the guy who decided to make this video. Because of him and my new love for Vibram FiveFinger shoes, I am back to running again. And, I have NO MORE CHRONIC HIP/SCIATICA PAIN! Life is good.

This picture warms my heart. “One world. One pain.” So, true. Social media seems to be dispelling the notion that people from other countries are different. I love that!! I believe, we are far more alike than we are different! Check out the comment section on Twitpic: http://twitpic.com/419nfm … feel the love! 🙂

Bears vs Packers – 2011

My dear friend Tami Cinquemani wrote the best article/blog about team rivalries that really extends beyond games … take a few minutes to read her thoughtful post! I’m so grateful to have such an open-minded, well-balanced, loving/caring friend! Thank you for being a FANtastic example, Tami!

May the best team win … even though I really hope it’s the Bears! 🙂

Saudi voices challenging the status quo

Saudi Woman (from: http://bikyamasr.com/wordpress/?p=9281)

I’m thrilled to see this forward thinking article by Dr. Khalid Alnowaiser, a Saudi lawyer and columnist: “Religious intolerance in Saudi Arabia – Enough is enough“.

Dr. Alnowaiser is a brave man to broach this subject. I hope his column is wide-read and that he gains respect for his attempt to have a discussion about religious fundamentalism. America is also full of judgmental religious zealots who need to examine their own misogynistic views and attitudes. It’s about time women worldwide are viewed as equals – in terms of rights and income (pay/salary)! Why, oh why are American women paid .77 cents for each dollar a man makes? Pathetic!! What kind of a world leader is that?! Like Dr. Alnowaiser said, “Enough is enough!”

I hope Saudi women and men stand behind this brave man … it’s time for change we can all believe in … on a worldwide scale!

Go Zenyatta … Go Guinness Girl, Go!!

Zenyatta - The Guinness Girl

(CBS/AFP/Getty Images)

I’ve never had an interest in horse racing until I saw this 60 Minutes story about Zenyatta! Here’s hoping that this amazing female horse will get her 20th win and go undefeated before she retires. If she wins today, she “might just be the greatest thoroughbred racehorse in history.” Interestingly, her trainer will give her a Guinness beer after a good workout in the afternoon. Hmmm. Zenyatta is particular though, the trainer has tried to offer her other brands of beer. But, this Diva insists on Guinness.

Zenyatta is the only female in the race – you go girl!! A special horse who was not so special at the beginning, she was sold at the auction at the ripe-old-age of one for a steal-deal because she had a rash. She was a late bloomer, it took her a long time to mature, and her trainer gave her the time to grow into her own. And that, she has done! I can’t wait to see the Guinness Girl on the run …

What a beautiful horse and a class act. Cheers for Zenyatta and her jokey, Mike Smith!!

Rally to Restore Sanity – 10.30.10

Glenda & Nikke at the Rally to Restore Sanity - 10.30.10

I was at the Rally to Restore Sanity/Fear and can attest to the refreshing civil feeling in the air … hope it continues to permeate and infect others! What an awesome day! I was with friends who drove from Florida to take part in the rally. On the Metro we talked to people from Minnesota to Maine. I overheard others say they were from Alaska. Amazing!

The crowds were intense – from the packed-like-sardines trip down on the Metro to the standstill as we tried to leave the Mall! But, it was worth it–every minute, every emotion, every smiling face–I’d do it all again tomorrow if I could! What a great feeling of unity and community!

A friend of mine heard a policeman say that the National Park Service was prepared for a crowd of 200,000; however, the cop said the crowd well-exceeded that … he thought there were more like 400-500,000 people gathered on the Mall. Hmmmm. Very interesting. So far, people estimating attendance figures suggest the crowd-size at about 215,000 (CBS). No matter what the final count … I’m just glad I was there! It’s one thing to watch historical events take place on TV or via the Web, but you take it to a whole new level when you participate in it! I’m so glad I took the time to go in person and experience it in real-time!

Your Mother’s been in an accident …

Tags :

Glenda with Mom Post-Op

The world shifted when my father called and said, “Your Mother’s been in an accident”. You brace yourself for the next sentence, hoping and praying silently that she’s all right. Your brain explodes with questions, what-ifs. You stop yourself from picturing the accident because that’s too painful to think about. Where is she? How is she? Have you spoken with her? Why aren’t you with her? The questions tumble out in a rush…the adrenalin is unstoppable! Please tell me she’s all right!

Just hours before Mom and I had gleefully chatted about watching with relief and sheer delight as the last of the Chilean miners made it out of the collapsed mine. And now, my Mom was stuck in an Emergency Room with no family by her side, with no way to communicate with us, and no way for us to find out what had happened to her. I called the ER, but was told by a nurse that because of the Hippa Law, she could not tell me how my mother was doing. She did finally tell me that my mother was in “stable” condition. After pleading that I was 500 miles away and needed to know more, she told me to call my mother back in 20 minutes as she was having x-rays at that time.

Meanwhile, I learned that my cousin drove by the accident scene. So, I called him. By looking at the car, he said I should consider driving down to NC from DC. Fortunately, my cousin’s wife is a nurse and was working that day. So, she went down to the ER to check on Mom. The accident happened around 10 am, Mom was cut out of her car by the Jaws of Life, and taken to the ER. I was notified of the accident by 11 am or so. It was 12:30 before we really knew how my mother was doing. Fortunately, she suffered only a broken arm. But, the fact that we didn’t know and couldn’t find out was terrifying. I can’t imagine what it would be like to face Hippa Laws if you were out-of-the-country when a relative had an accident in the US. And, let’s be real … how many people have family that work at the hospital! I’m seriously beginning to question the Hippa Law stuff.

Further, be wary of your ER doctor. I know there are a lot of good docs out there and this is not a bash session. However, my mother’s ER doctor told her that the break was a “clean one”. This was on a Thursday. The following Tuesday two specialists told her that it was a nasty break and required surgery. She now has a metal plate, a bunch of screws, and a bone graft in her left arm. Whatever you do … do not take what your ER doctor tells you as the gospel. Seek out other opinions … our family learned a valuable lesson. My Mother’s ER doctor mishandled her at the hospital, too. For all we know, he could have damaged her arm further. The specialists noted that part of the bone had broken off. Was it shattered in the accident or did it tear off because of moving her arm around in appropriately? I doubt we’ll ever know … but, I’d like to compare the xrays from the ER room and the specialist. By the way, Mom said that the EMTs were much more gentle than the ER doc. How fascinating!

My mother is doing well post-op and we are hopeful that she makes a full recovery. But her passion for things like gardening may be tempered for good. Let’s hope not. Mom, I’m so grateful that you are still with us. Too many people do not survive auto accidents. God was shining down on you and us! Thank you, Lord-Allah-Yahweh!!
